Books I've been reading
Since the last post:
  1. Norstrilia, The Instrumentality of Mankind, and Quest of the Three Worlds by Cordwainer Smith
  2. Jhegaala (Vlad) by Steven Brust
  3. A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry, Book 6) by Laurel K Hamilton
  4. Tales of the Slayers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  5. The Annotated Brothers Grimm
  6. Alone Again Or by Michael Bassette
  7. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum
  8. Roo'd by Joshua Klein
  9. Metrophage by Richard Kadrey
  10. Farthing by Jo Walton. Did not finish.
  11. The Weaving of a Dream (Picture Puffins) by Marilee Heyer
  12. Mother of Demons by Eric Flint
  13. Plague of Demons by Keith Laumer
  14. Small Favor (The Dresden Files, Book 10) by Jim Butcher
  15. Queen of the Orcs: King's Property (Queen of the Orcs) by Morgan Howell. Did not finish.
Re-reads, textbooks, and game books don't count. That's 35 books in 120 days, or about 2 books a week. I should probably write some reviews and update Shelfari and iRead.

Farthing was a rough ride. I read it but it seemed too... I don't know. Too surface, too simple.

So what made you not finish Farthing and Queen of the Orcs?

Farthing: Clumsy, poorly-executed, inconsistent alternate history with painfully bad dialog and no depth of character.
Queen of the Orcs: OMG gender issues. Dialing up the "noble savage" factor to 11. Horrible things done to the main character just to make her "admirable" and establish that the men who did them to her are "bad men". It's a cliched "heroic abuse survivor" novel designed to be a Lifetime made-for-TV movie.
