Between San Francisco and San Bruno.
South of San Francisco proper, but north of SFO airport. Woodlawn Cemetary, where I was, is literally just across F street from the BART station, next to El Camino Real.

In 1900 they passed a law prohibiting any new burials in the city or county of San Francisco. By 1937 they had evicted all of the cemetaries and bodies outside of the city limits, and the town of Colma became the graveyard community: 73% of the city is graveyards, and most of the rest is peripheral businesses: mortuaries, statuaries, memorial artisans, etc. The city bascially incorporated because the mortuaries didn't want to be evicted again.

The dead still outnumber the living in Colma tens of thousands to one.
