A coworker died last week
Well, a former coworker. We let her go for very good reasons, not least of the which was the fact that she didn't get along well with any of us. I barely remembered her from when we were at UW together.

Hit by a car in the U district. Dead at 25.

I've seen a lot of well-wishing, a lot of "our prayers go out her family and friends at this time of loss" and "I am shaken up by it all", but none of it seems appropriate or sincere.

One of the popular kids in highschool died freshman year--drowned in his own vomit. I really never liked him, and while it was a shame that "another one bites the dust" it was hard to watch everyone else gushing. And being expected to feel the same way. Ah well.

Reminds them of their own mortality. They are not saddened by the loss but rather sad that they too will die. Or something. However not knowing the person all I can say is that it does suck that your former coworker was killed so early in life.
