A fun little geekery site
This Starship Sizes site was on SlashDot a while ago, and I made a mental note to check it out when it is less ... slashdotted. Now you can SEE the size comparison of an Imperial Star Destroyer, a Borg Cube, and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man! They do include some people for scale, and I like the accompanying "technical notes:"

SHIP NAME/TYPE: Generic Humanoid
Carbon Units
Anywhere from around
HEIGHT: 1.5m to 2.0m
BUILDER/COMMENTS Monkeys? God? The God of Monkeys?
SOURCE: Warm Liquid Protein Goo

I don't believe it.

It's a beautiful site, to be sure, but I just have a hard time with their assertion that a Trade Federation Battleship was twice the length of a Star Destroyer. We've seen both up close, and the Star Destroyer is just freaking huge, even the standard one.

I can see it being larger than a Star Destroyer, but only about a seventh the size of the Super Star Destroyer. I mean, your basic Star Destroyer is still visibly a set of few dozen decks, the height of a skyscraper, and that fits with my perception of the height of the Trade Federation battleships.

The one that surprised me was the scale difference between the two Death Stars.

Really? I see the Star Destroyer as carrying whole wings of TIE fighters, which came out the hole in the bottom and were dwarfed by the destroyer. And then there was the Falcon perched on the back side of the destroyer's bridge in Empire. The Trade Fed ships, though, I envisioned as having a much smaller bay. Maybe I need to rewatch I and V to compare...

The Death Star thing surprised me, too. I followed the reference link it provided, and must say that I'm suspicious of the logic there.

I'm looking forward to going home and using IE to tile together the ships I'm most familiar with... the Star Destroyers, Babylon 5, the Galactica, Zentraedi battlewagons and such.

Re:
Consider the large robot cargo ships that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon boarded to get down to the surface. The Federation Battle Ships housed several of these cargo ships in a single docking bay, in adition to several wings of fighter-drones.

That makes sense.

I looked at the source material on the Death Stars, too, and the SW site refers to the novelization of VI as saying that the second Death Star was twice the size of the first. That doesn't track with the comparison on the page, though.
