My afternoon thus far  
Problem: AvantGo sync hangs at "Retrieving profile information from device"
Solution attempts:
1) Stop and restart sync process.
ActiveSync refuses to start
2) Disconnect handheld from desktop and try again
Same problem.
3) Reset handheld.
Same problem.
4) Reboot desktop.
Problem persists.
5) Uninstall Desktop ActiveSync software.
Done
6) Reinstall ActiveSync software
New Problem: installer won't run
a) try again
Still won't run
b) Reboot machine with much verbal obscenity
Installer runs
AvantGo Sync still hangs.
7) Reinstall AvantGo Client
Client STILL hangs at "Retrieving profile information from device"
