Latest Cookbook: Mario Batali Italian Grill
I haven't started reading this yet, but there's a bit of a story attached.
Yesterday, Mario was here promoting his book and discussing grilling basics, how to cook pasta, why he won't open a Seattle restaurant, how he torments opponents on Iron Chef, etc.

There was a lottery for giveaway books, and I didn't win ... but Ian (my manager) did. I made a little noise about enjoying the talk and wanting a copy of the book.

Ian ordered a copy of the book for me. Of course, in the process he discovered a bug in software we own, so it became my responsibility to fix the bug. The package arrived today, and he jokingly said "You can't open this until the bug is fixed."

The fix is tested and out in production now, so I'm thumbing through the book. Thank you, Ian.

So why won't he open one here? Does he consider it tacky to compete with Salumi?

He wants Seattle to remain a "recreational" city for him. If he opened restaurant here, every time he visited seattle he would have to go to work and praise/castigate/correct somebody.

That's a good point. I half-suspected that he'd secretly been harboring a vast loathing for the city as a whole or something.

that is a good reason why
