Day 2 of N
Enjoying life at Amazon, even though I haven't had any chances to do any real coding yet. I might be able to start playing with tutorials tomorrow. In the meantime, I already have a list of thirty-some todos to sort out in the next few weeks - mostly in the form of "read this tutorial", "look up documentation on that", and "watch the other introduction video - the one they didn't have time to show me at orientation, but say I MUST watch".

Note to self: the longer I delay eating, the less likely I am to make healthy choices. If I eat early, sandwich or salad sounds good. If I put off lunch until later, pizza or bbq starts sounding very tempting.

Dentist appointment tomorrow. First one in far too long.

Did you get a bird's-eye view of Amazon being down yesterday?

Sort of. I was in orientation until early afternoon, so I was just seeing the results when it happened, even taking down the internal websites used for demontrations. I only heard about the full severity later, after the fix had been posted and was propogating out.

That's ... superbly cool, for all silly reasons.

Are you at liberty to say what happened?

It made my life hell for a while, though I did at least figure out that one of the errors we're getting back is that we at times are making more than one request per second via the API. Ah, details, details...

At a guess ... no, I don't think I am at liberty to say, beyond the very high-level fact that we are pushing out a lot of changes now before we lock down the code for the holidays. More code rollouts = more bugs and deployment problems.

bah humbug. :) I'll just keep my ear to the periodic emails, then. :)

I'll do some poking around. If I find that it's already "common knowledge" or officially disclosed, I'll let you know - but I really don't want to get in trouble over disclosure issues my first week. Especially on a "publically viewable and searchable internet forum".

Yeah, that would be pretty absurd. No pressure, honestly.

“I’m afraid we don’t comment on our technology, except to say that these are complex systems, and we do our best to make sure they’re always functioning. When there are problems, we try to get them corrected as quickly as possible. Thanks for checking.”

Rumors stretch from video store to the death of obidos not quite going right. Does seem that your employer is keeping a fine lid on things. :)
